A well known face around the local non-league circuit, McDermott joined the Pitmen in December 2016 after a spell at Redditch United

A former trainee at Walsall, Stourbridge-born McDermott came through the youth system to make his Saddlers debut against Sheffield Wednesday in a League Cup game in October 2004. In all, McDermott made nineteen appearances for Walsall over four seasons, spending a short spell out on loan at Halesowen Town during the 2006-2007 season

After being released by Walsall in the summer of 2008, McDermott joined Kidderminster Harriers after a summer of numerous trials elsewhere. After a good start to life at Aggborough, McDermott was diagnosed with a rare condition called Ulcerative Colitis, which required lengthy treatment and a long spell on the sidelines. Once fit again, he was allowed to return to Halesowen for another loan spell in February 2010 for a month

Released by Harriers in the summer of 2020, more trials followed with league and non-league clubs, before he earned a deal at York City. It was whilst at Bootham Crescent he led the luxury lifestyle of a top professional under a scheme run by ex-Wolves man Michael McIndoe, which eventually fell apart in 2011 with over 100 footballers owed over 30 million by McIndoe

Short spells at AFC Telford United and hometown club Stourbridge followed in 2012 after his spell at York, with McDermott returning to the Walsall area to link up with Rushall Olympic in the summer of 2012. Alongside former Walsall team-mate and future Hednesford colleague Gavin Caines, McDermott helped the Pics establish themselves as a solid step three team after promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier League in 2011

A short spell at Vanarama Conference North side Worcester City followed in 2014, but injuries saw McDermott take time away from football for a year before returning in the summer of 2016 with Evo-Stik Southern Premier League side Redditch United. after eleven games at the Valley Stadium, he linked up with the Pitmen, scoring on his debut against Workington
